CLOSING STATEMENT

I think one of the essential experiences in life is cinema. It is a creative depiction of life and the human experience. It pushes the boundaries of our reality and forces us to be part of these subjective moments. Jaques Ranciere states in his book The Emancipated Spectator a theory that modern audiences of film have become passive in our consumption of the media and now artists and filmmakers have sought to transform spectators into active agents.
I think this is what Douglas Gordon, Brendan Dawes and Christian Marclay achieve fantastically through their bodies of work. This engagement of an audience with a thought-revoking manipulation of familiar media. This is the driving force behind my own work. The depiction of time, space and linearity throughout these encounters. How do these narratives shift and change under our manipulation?
Milton Glaser once said "I move things around until they look right" and "Anything I've really discovered has come through the act of making things." That is precisely what makes my exploration of these films rich and fulfilling.
I gained a lot from Processing this year. The ability to quickly alter and experiment with different media inputs helped me discover new ways of seeing. The way we observe film under usual context rarely varies and I transferred these moving images into new ideas.
I discussed theories within science fiction primarily as it is what resonates with me. I think film is a very personable subject for what is usually a shared experience. For example, most folks have a favourite film. Film connects us and forces us to ask questions. It evokes emotional responses and symbolises our lives politically and socially.
By breaking down these familiar pieces of media into data we are left with multiple avenues for exploration. We can begin to analyse the language of film through these different outputs and highlight patterns within. Whether it be viewing an entire film all at once or only seeing snippets. By cutting, slicing, shaking up and putting back together, we see something new within these works every time without fail.
When I consider where I began with this project to where I finished, I realise how much I have learned from this intense exploration (I have seen Blade Runner enough times to last me a long while). I have a personal stake in every film I have dissected, and although I stuck to a particular genre, for the most part, I feel it gives authenticity to my formulated ideas.
I realised the importance of time within the media I was focused on. The themes within Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Interstellar and most other science fiction all results back to this idea of life as a linear journey. A film is also for the most part a linear journey and what my work this year and science-fiction have in common is that it pushes the boundaries of linearity and transforms itself into something new and different.
Although I covered many different themes within my exploration I return back to the main point of it all. That we can all dissect and formulate our own ideas within these experiences and with the aid of different programs can push ourselves to see something we couldn't before.
